Mentoring for Diversity and Inclusion in Academia: Nurturing a Culturally Competent Workforce

This chapter addresses the persistent gender and racial disparities in academia despite rising awareness and initiatives. It examines the impact of gender prejudice on researchers’ careers, work-life balance, and mental health and highlights how these biases affect underrepresented groups, particularly in STEM fields. The chapter discusses the importance of mentorship in fostering diversity and inclusion, showcasing strategies to improve equity, such as diverse recruitment, inclusive policies, and ongoing training. Case studies illustrate the benefits of effective mentoring and the challenges of inadequate support.
