The chapter deals with the representation of the topos of the city of Algiers in the work of the contemporary French-Algerian author Nina Bouraoui. It analyses four novels of an autofictional nature, namely Garçon manqué, Mes mauvaises pensées, Nos baisers sont des adieux and Tous les hommes désirent naturellement savoir, in which the narrator’s description of her childhood and adolescence spent in the Algerian capital is one of the central thematic constants. The chapter focuses on themes related to racial, gender and national discrimination, the sexualisation of public space, social isolation and the intimidation of mixed families by the indigenous population in the post-decolonisation era. The aim of the study is to explore the role of the topography of urban space in relation to the process of constructing one’s own identity, as the imagined return to the land that shaped the narrator’s childhood allows her to overcome the sense of otherness she suffers from, and thus alleviate what she calls her “fractured identity”.
