The chapter analyzes an overlooked aspect of poetry—the challenges of suburban domesticity as featured in the work of several women poets. I examine poems on gender-based suburban unhappiness by Phyllis McGinley, Anne Sexton, Adrienne Rich, and Gwen Harwood, focusing on themes of gender-based discontent within suburban settings. This examination situates their works within the broader critique of mid-twentieth-century suburban domesticity and its implications for the construction of suburban women’s identities.
