Cardiovascular Effects of GLP-1 Analogues

Cardiovascular disease remains a significant concern for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) due to their increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events. Over the years, various pharmacological agents have been developed to manage T2DM and mitigate cardiovascular risk. GLP-1 analogues and combination therapies represent innovative approaches to managing T2DM and mitigating cardiovascular risk. The robust evidence from clinical trials underscores their potential to improve patient outcomes by addressing both metabolic and cardiovascular aspects of the disease. One mechanism is the reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation through the activation of the GLP-1 receptor in cardiac tissues. GLP-1 analogues also decrease apoptosis of cardiac cells and improve endothelial function, thereby contributing to the protection of the heart against cardiovascular diseases. Additional mechanisms include the modulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and the reduction of thrombosis risk. As our understanding of these therapies continues to evolve, they are likely to play an increasingly prominent role in the comprehensive management of T2DM and associated cardiovascular complications.
