Media, Scandalization, and Mass Hysteria in the Coca-Cola Poisoning Scare in Croatia
摘要
The study situates the Croatian Coca-Cola case within the broader framework of scandalization and mass sociogenic illness (MSI). The case can be analyzed from multiple perspectives, ranging from the effectiveness and quality of the company’s crisis communication to the response of government institutions and the role of social media in sparking and amplifying the scandal. The chapter focuses on the role of online news media and their potential contribution to the outburst of public outrage and mass hysteria. The analysis examines how Croatian media contributed to the crisis through sensationalistic reporting, dramatization, amplification of blame, and reinforcement of public anxiety. By connecting this case to broader debates on media scandalization and MSI, the findings contribute to the scholarship on contemporary trends in attention-driven journalism and the power of media to construct scandals, influence people’s behavior and advance collective anxiety.
