Financial Inclusion for Sustainable Economic Development in India

Financial inclusion is the key to economic growth by promoting employment generation, elimination of poverty, and contributing to economic empowerment of women. It facilitates access to secure savings, credit and capital at affordable rates, efficient payment mechanisms that contribute to expansion of small businesses. It also provides impetus to achievement of several sustainable development goals out of the 17 SDGs recognised by United Nations. The present study intents to discuss the importance of financial inclusion in the growth of Indian economy. The Government of India, NABARD, banking institutions and RBI has taken various steps to enhance the penetration of better financial services to attain inclusive growth. The present paper studies the trends of financial inclusion in India. Despite facing many challenges including low financial literacy, gender disparities, high service costs, inadequate banking infrastructure, and low financial literacy the trends show development towards better access to financial services.
