Semiotic Explorations in Indian Children’s Storybooks: A Real-World Application to Literary and Transportation Education
摘要
Semiotics, the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation, offers a lens for analyzing how meaning is constructed and communicated. The application of semiotic theory to children’s literature remains underexplored. By employing a semiotic framework, this study investigates how signs and symbols, cultural codes, are embedded within narrative structures, character representations, and visual elements. Research also explores how semiotic structures contribute to constructing a child’s understanding of the real-world and how children’s literature constructs and negotiates cultural meanings, signs, and symbols of real-world applications, such as transportation within specific socio-cultural contexts. Furthermore, the study will analyze selected illustrated children’s books to explore the multimodal interplay between verbal (textual) and visual (illustrative) semiotic systems. It will examine how they work together or operate independently to facilitate comprehension and interpretation for the intended application to real-world problems and situations. The present study also investigates the cognitive behavior of children through semiotic learning and their understanding to explore practical avenues for social uses.
