MuVie: Innovative Methods and Digital Technologies for Blind Music Education – Needs Analysis

The European project MuVie - Music and Visual Impairment in Inclusive Education, funded by the Erasmus + programme, aims to make music education more accessible to blind and visually impaired students through the integration of advanced digital tools such as computers, Braille displays, screen readers and specialised music notation software. In its initial phase, the project carried out an in-depth analysis of the state of the art and a survey of the real needs of end-users through a questionnaire administered to students in four European countries - Italy, Germany, Poland and Cyprus - with the aim of collecting data on habits, barriers and strategies in music learning in the presence of visual impairment. The survey highlighted, on the one hand, the existence of good practices and, on the other hand, the numerous needs expressed by students, both in specialised institutions and in inclusive school settings. It also highlighted the central role of the family and inclusive school policies in the educational success of students. On the basis of these findings, the project launched a study on the applicability of artificial intelligence to improve the usability of Braille music and to increase the effectiveness of teaching, outlining the need for a dedicated digital platform to optimise access to resources, provide training for teachers and promote a more inclusive and sustainable music education.
