In the years to come worldwide demand for energy is set to continuously rise. Currently, the European Union is exploring the potential of energy sector strategies that aim to reduce their dependency on energy imports. A particularly noteworthy area is the development of hybrid offshore wind / solar parks. Offshore solar applications may extend the potential of photovoltaics at bigger scales. This is because it makes use of abundant space at sea, utilizes the benefits of the economies of scale and provides a complementary energy yield. The paper explains that deployment of hybrid parks could be supported by the development and certification of installations that can enable the utilization of existing offshore cable infrastructures with the potential to provide stable energy output with low impact on marine ecosystems. The views presented in this paper are based on preliminary results from the European project BAMBOO (Build scAled Modular Bamboo-inspired Offshore sOlar systems) that aims to tackle the challenges and barriers for the implementation of a sustainable, large-scale offshore solar system of modular flat pontoon concept. It is concluded that the deployment of large-scale offshore solar systems still faces challenges related to the scaling up, lifetime performance and reliability of available technologies as well as the absence of a unified regulatory framework.
