This essay explores Artificial Intelligence (AI) and neuroenhancements and the broader political, philosophical, and educational questions they raise. While these technologies might seem to represent different approaches, they converge in their fundamental challenge to human agency and learning. The educational questions I raise concern the nature of human learning and intelligence and representations of learning in science fiction. The political questions consider the role of commercial interests in the development of these new technologies. The philosophical questions probe what it means to be human and what is threatened by AI in relation to our historical context in the Anthropocene and our potential transition into an ‘Artificialocene’. I do so by drawing from the discussion of ‘learning as downloading’ in The Matrix, as well as the increasingly use of ChatGPT. I am concerned about the replacement of the human being with something new and better—and what is lost as a result. These threats challenge us to better understand what it means to be human and what we ask of education, before both disappear. AI is being introduced into education when we face the threat of mass extinctions. At what point do we become unrecognizable to ourselves and disappear behind things we make?
