One important tool in the study of solutions to the YBE is the retraction relation. This allows us to associate to each solution another, often simpler, solution called the retraction solution. In this chapter, we study the class of multipermutation solutions, which exhibit optimal behavior with respect to the retraction relation. For finite involutive solutions to the YBE, multipermutation solutions are characterized by their structure groups.
