The Belgian Insurance Ombudsman Scheme is among the oldest Ombudsman schemes in Belgium. After a constant evolution it handles a growing number of complaints against insurers and brokers with extended investigation powers. Its yearly report is also a major source of legislative change in the Belgian insurance sector. The Belgian Insurance Ombudsman Scheme was established by the insurance industry in 1987. Initially, the ombudsperson was employed by the Professional Association of Insurers, with an office at its headquarters. The main purpose of establishing an ADR body for insurance was to avoid legal proceedings and to try to understand the negative image of the sector.
