Astrobiology is a scientific field defined as the study of the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe. In Argentina, around the 1960s, early formal attempts to conduct scientific research in the “search for signals from technologically advanced extraterrestrial civilizations” or “intelligent extraterrestrial life” emerged, commonly associated with the SETI project (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence). This led to the development of a unique SETI project in the Southern hemisphere, the only one of its kind in Latin America. Later, the search for life in the universe took a different direction in the country with the rise of new studies on planetary habitability. These efforts, rooted in stellar astrophysics, later incorporated approaches from the biological sciences. This innovation sparked interdisciplinary studies and included laboratory experiments in this developing field. The initial interdisciplinary studies were expanded with contributions from other areas such as geology and cosmochemistry, broadening the scope of existing research topics. As a result of collaborative efforts among Argentinian researchers from various disciplines, the “Argentinian Research Unit in Astrobiology” (Astrobio.ar) was established. The theme of the original investigations into the search for intelligent extraterrestrial life was revisited from a new perspective with the OTHER project. This chapter provides a brief overview of the key events that led to the development of astrobiology in Argentina.
