Added Wave-Resistance Reduction by Means of a Passive Flapping-Foil Thruster

The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the benefits of using a passive foil at the bow of a ferry ship model in head waves. Previous studies have shown that the use of flapping foils reduces the added resistance in waves, increasing the fuel efficiency and acts as a damping device on the ship motions. In this respect a ferry ship model was tested at two speeds (1.2 and 1.4 m/s) and one loading condition in both calm water and regular and irregular waves at the towing tank of NTUA. The model was fitted with an adjustable passive foil at various sections at the bow of the model. A custom configuration allowed adjusting spring stiffness and damping coefficient. The results refer to static and passive configurations and the resistance, CG rise and dynamic trim are presented. The experiments showed great reduction on both the added resistance and the models motions that is in accordance with previous published work.
