Lost Memories: Developing an Accessible Game for Visually Impaired Players
摘要
This paper explores accessibility in digital games for visually impaired players, with a focus on the development of a 3D Role-Playing Game (RPG). To inform the design process, a questionnaire was applied to gather insights into players perceptions of RPGs and accessibility, alongside an interview with a blind player to identify specific challenges and preferences. The development process was guided by the Design Thinking methodology, selected for its emphasis on user empathy and problem-solving grounded in real user needs. This approach was integrated with the use of the Unity engine, chosen for its flexibility and widespread use in accessible game development. Data analysis informed the creation of a player profile and personas, which, combined with the Game Accessibility Guidelines (GAG), supported design decisions throughout the project. The findings suggest that, despite broad recognition of the importance of accessibility, its practical implementation in digital games remains limited. This underscores the need for Information Technology (IT) degree programs to incorporate accessibility into their curricula, fostering the training of professionals equipped to create more inclusive digital experiences.
