Surgical patients are unique in that they are thrust into highly catabolic states with high energy and protein demands while their gastrointestinal tract is often compromised by disease and/or surgical intervention. A solid understanding of their pre-existing nutritional status, risk factors, and methods to deliver nutritional interventions is necessary to optimize outcomes for surgical patients.
