This chapter introduces the reader to the various operative approaches for the chest that are utilized in the setting of trauma. These exposures include an emergency department left anterolateral thoracotomy, posterolateral thoracotomy, median sternotomy, and subxiphoid pericardial window. Each technique is described in detail along with specific indications for and what injuries are best managed with each exposure.
