Introduction
摘要
Interculturalism is a never-ending journey in which readers can participate, not a distant field that they can only view through academic lenses or as distant experiences. The editors and authors of this book—all pioneers in the intercultural field—invite you into our journeys with the audacious wish that hearing our stories will inform your own. The intercultural field refers to the work of professionals who focus on the cultural influences on communication and understanding between people from different cultures. Interculturalism is a perspective that the distance between cultures can be bridged with study, and knowledge about intercultural communication and intercultural relations. In the beginning researchers and practitioners in the field centered on international intercultural understanding, however more recently attention has also been applied within cultures. Interculturalism is nuanced and complex just as human beings and their interactions are. Reflecting on their professional lives, authors included events, experiences, and lessons from their personal lives. Their stories that recall the beginnings of the field are the foundation on which the intercultural field rests. Although the context today is not the same as when interculturalism blossomed in the 1960s, and no one can accurately predict what will happen, it is safe to say that the intercultural field is well established and will be important to the world of the future.
