Upper respiratory infections (URIs) are among the world’s most common infectious diseases, impacting millions of people every year leading to significant discomfort and economic burden. Conventional treatments often focused on relieving symptoms, but interest in phytotherapy has increased due to the development of antibiotic resistance and the need for alternative solutions. The therapeutic potential of medicinal plants in treating common URIs, such as the common cold, sinusitis, laryngitis, and pharyngitis, is explored in this chapter. We evaluated the key phytochemicals with antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory activities, including phenolic acid, flavonoids, terpenoids, and alkaloids, in terms of their pharmacological properties. Utilizing a combination of clinical research and traditional usage, we critically assessed the effectiveness of several plant-based remedies, including ginger, garlic, peppermint, thyme, licorice root, elderberry, and Echinacea. Furthermore, the mechanisms of action, suitable doses, and possible adverse effects of these phytotherapeutic compounds have been addressed. This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview of phytotherapy as a viable alternative or complementary approach to conventional URI treatments by integrating scientific evidence and traditional knowledge, emphasizing its role in improving patient outcomes and promoting sustainable healthcare practices.
