This chapter defines the research objectives and introduces the theoretical framework guiding the analysis. It is followed by a historical reconstruction of the interest in, and conceptualization of, plants from antiquity to the present, providing an overview of the current state of research on plant abilities. The chapter concludes with a focused examination of the relevance of systemic-relational approaches and ecological perspectives for the study of behavior and complex systems.
