Acne is a persistent inflammatory skin disorder. It will continue to be a problem for roughly 30% of these individuals into adulthood. While lesions are most frequently discovered on the face, they can also be detected on the back and the chest. When a person reaches puberty, a series of genetic and hormonal events begin to take place, which ultimately leads to the development of acne. Oil production in the sebaceous glands of the face, back, and chest increases as the hormone levels associated with developing secondary sexual characteristics rise. Those genetically predisposed to the condition have a process known as follicular hyperkeratosis, characterized by a thickening of the lining of the wall of the duct of the oil gland. Eventually, this thickening will cause the duct to become blocked, resulting in the buildup of oil beneath the skin in the form of comedones, more generally known as blackheads. There is a proliferation of bacteria within these comedones known as Corynebacterium acnes. These bacteria create free fatty acids, which irritate the skin. When this process is allowed to continue, it can result in pustular and cystic lesions, both of which have the potential to rupture and leave scars.
