Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic mental health condition with a heterogeneous clinical course. A diagnosis of BD is often delayed by about 6 years from the initial onset of mood symptoms, which may lead to a worsened prognosis. Recognizing latent BD and its early manifestations is essential to improving early detection and outcomes. In this chapter, we outline the main predictors of BD onset among high-risk groups, such as the offspring of parents with BD and individuals diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD). We will also review current criteria for identifying latent BD and propose future directions in this field.

摘要
