What is art? Art acquires different meanings depending on the circle debating its definition. Such a discussion often involves cultural and class differences. The research we present was carried out in Calabar, a neighborhood in the city of Salvador, Bahia, of quilombola origin (Black communities built by formerly enslaved people during the colonial period in Latin America). The community is surrounded by middle-class areas and has a history of achievements and resistance. A significant artistic presence is visible on walls, electric poles, squares, and other environments. We explore a subjective conceptualization of art that is the personal definition constructed by people from their meaningful sense of the world. We analyze the artistic trajectories of three members of the Calabar community, highlighting the influence of elements such as their socioeconomic reality, history, and interaction with the neighborhood and their community in this process.
