Are white Americans who identify as “colorblind” in their racial ideology actually masking a conscious and explicitly white supremacist suite of affiliated beliefs, as many scholars allege? This question matters deeply, as a majority of white Americans surveyed identified with a “colorblind” view of racial ideology. We find that “colorblind” white Americans vary considerably in the primacy of their white identity, their affect towards Donald Trump, and their sense of racial resentment. Thus, self-identification as ‘colorblind’ alone provides limited insight into underlying racial attitudes. We advise disaggregating “colorblind” as a response category into constituent subcomponents for future researchers. Future research should unpack these variations to understand more precisely how colorblind racial ideologies shape American politics.
