White Americans differ greatly in how they understand and express their racial and ethnic identities. Some express white racial pride. Others acknowledge the evils of racism, structural biases, and inherent white privilege in a conventionally progressive manner. Still more expressed a seemingly “colorblind” view of race. In this chapter, we develop and validate a novel closed-ended survey measure of white racial ideology based on our inductively derived typology. We validate this scale by asking an open-ended question regrading racial and ethnic identity, finding high concordance between the closed and open-ended methods of measurement strategies for white racial ideology and identity. We then show that this closed-ended item is suitable for analyzing and capturing the polylithic nature of white identity. This new measure provides an efficient yet robust tool to study the complexity of white identity in contemporary America.
