Airborne contact dermatitis (ABCD) is an inflammatory reaction that affects the skin upon exposure to airborne allergens or irritants. ABCD is considered a prototype in the field of environmental dermatology and can be irritant, allergic, phototoxic, or photoallergic. Airborne irritant contact dermatitis (ABICD) is mainly related to occupational exposure, and the number of reports has increased considerably in recent years. Causative agents are classically divided into three categories: fibers; dust particles; aerosols, vapors, and gases. Clinical lesions typically include small erythematous papules or papulo-vesicles, sometimes constituting a maculopapular rash with noticeable scratch marks. They predominate in uncovered areas of the body, especially the face, neck, hands, and forearms, although they can also affect covered areas. Obtaining a detailed clinical history and physical examination, implementing a workplace visit, collecting samples from the environment and the skin as well as performing patch test and use test are essential for establishing an accurate diagnosis.
