From the tenth to the eleventh century, OlèrdolaOlèrdola served as the centre of control over the PenedèsPenedès plains, a border region between Muslim and Christian domains under the authority of the Count of BarcelonaBarcelona. This site, situated atop a hill, declined as a centre of power at the beginning of the twelfth century and was replaced by VilafrancaVilafranca del Penedès, a newly established town on the flatlands. The transfer of this power centre influenced the settlement patterns of the surrounding periphery, namely the habitat sites of the Penedès plains. While some of these sites remained occupied, others experienced decline and abandonment or were relocated to be closer to the new centre.
