Resident-Led Singing Activities Supported by the Municipal Community Center (Kojima)
摘要
Kojima Civic Exchange Center offers many workshops, public lectures, and open seminars for the community. Residents in Kojima have several options in choosing music and other activities in the Center. We studied a singing group, Let’s Sing Seniors Association, housed in the Center with older adults over 60 years of age. Based on a survey, observations, interviews, and mid-pandemic follow-up interviews, we found that members of Let’s Sing Seniors Association met once a month to enjoy singing many songs and make friends. Due to an activity leader, older adults have become more interested in vocal techniques, pitch, breathing, and expression. All participants immersed themselves and enjoyed in these musical and non-musical activities in the group. However, music activities gave older adults more positive feelings of satisfaction, fulfillment, self-esteem, and a spirit to challenge themselves than non-music activities.
