This chapter discusses the role and significance of the first generation of Filipino architects employed by the Bureau of Public Works’ Division of Architecture by presenting examples of their work via picture postcards printed in Manila. By the 1920s, this small cohort of Filipino professionals coordinated all public architectural and planning schemes in the Philippine capital city. What they did, and how they contributed to the colonial cityscape, thus, is discussed in this part of the book. Accordingly, the Filipinization of Manila’s environmental character, as shown by contemporary postcards, is presented and explained.
