Substantiated and Unsubstantiated Behavioral Interventions for Individuals with Autism
摘要
The focus of this chapter is on evidence-based practices (EBPs) shown to improve educational and behavioral outcomes for learners with autism spectrum disorder. The autism intervention research has grown dramatically over the past several decades. Rather than provide an exhaustive description of all EBPs, we present an overview of strategies organized across three main sections: high-leverage practices, evidence-based focused intervention strategies, and comprehensive treatment models. High-leverage practices encompass foundational teaching principles that significantly impact learning and development across diverse settings and for a range of learners. Evidence-based focused intervention strategies include specific instructional techniques to improve targeted skills for learners with autism, whereas comprehensive treatment models are manualized educational programs designed to address a broad range of developmental outcomes for autistic children. We conclude the chapter with a discussion of unsubstantiated treatments and emphasize the importance of relying on scientifically validated practices to optimize outcomes for autistic learners.
