This chapter explores novels that contest the binary choices invariably introduced in Girton Girl-focused fiction: whether, after her academic career, the woman would be forced to return home as a “sunbeam” for her family—or more realistically, to become a spinster—or to enter an unfulfilling teaching position. Introducing plots that imagine that a “sunbeam” existence may be impossible for many university-educated women and that intimate that teaching and academic administration might offer invigorating challenges, the novels press against the boundaries of the already-established college story plot and its intertwined tales of the women destined to spinsterhood. However, the novels’ ends halt those expansive plots. This curtailing results in an ambiguity at these novels’ ends that betray a sense that the Girl Girton was outgrowing her position in the marginalized genre of women’s university fiction. These novels thus tentatively reposition this character as a rapidly evolving vehicle through which to develop more diverse stories of university women.
