This chapter explores novels that both benefit from and tentatively resist a common and virulent stereotype: the university-educated woman as a bad wife. While in these novels the university-educated women display leanings toward all “bad wife” characteristics, the novels simultaneously introduce plotlines that show a university-educated woman and man moving toward not just more egalitarian marriages but also ones bound by support for each other’s professional aspirations in particular and each other’s personal reputations more generally. In these tentative plot threads, the novels hint at possible narratives that university-educated women could infuse into traditional marriage plots, ones in which the characters experiment with malleable gender roles and, perhaps even more daringly, discuss intimacy. The novels accentuate these plot threads by suspending the characters at the novels’ conclusions between various possible marriage fates.
