The Academic Literacies Approach for Diversity: Academic Writing as a Social Practice in Higher Education in Central Asia
摘要
As the opening to a volume that reimagines academic writing through the lens of Academic Literacies in Central Asia’s post-Soviet, multilingual context, this introduction challenges dominant models such as English for Academic Purposes, which often treat writing as a neutral skill. Instead, it foregrounds academic writing as a socially situated practice shaped by power, identity, and institutional dynamics. This chapter critically reviews global scholarship and argues for the relevance of Academic Literacies in a region undergoing rapid transformation through English-medium instruction and internationalisation. It sets the stage for the volume’s contributions that explore how Central Asian students and educators navigate academic writing amid shifting linguistic, institutional, and epistemological landscapes. These contributing authors frame academic writing within broader sociocultural and political contexts, calling for an approach that embraces diversity, linguistic hybridity, and local knowledge-making.
