Turbulent jets and plumes are turbulent flows produced by momentum and buoyant forces, and are ubiquitous in nature and engineered environments. In this introductory chapter jets and plumes are illustrated with images and a wide range of applications commonly observed in real life—volcano eruptions, thermal plumes, environmental discharges. infectious disease spreading, and space vehicle landing on outer planet. The use of length scales, dimensional reasoning and integral modelling are also introduced via several worked examples.
