The forests and other types of habitats in the Appalachians and Ozarks are characterized by diverse assemblages of plants. Some of these plants are of special interest because of their rarity, use by humans, or some unusual feature. Edible plants, medicinal plants, carnivorous plants, and poisonous plants are the best-known to most people, but there are other plants with some feature that causes them to be unusual in nature, although the particular feature involved may not be readily apparent. The purpose of this chapter is to describe some of these plants of special interest found in the Appalachians and Ozarks. These range from such familiar plants as the common but non-native dandelion to some of the rarest plants in the entire world.
