Extubation failure in critically ill patients is a concern because it is associated with worse outcomes, including increased risk of death and hospital costs. Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) and high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) can be used as a resource to facilitate weaning from mechanical ventilation (MV) and to prevent or treat post-extubation respiratory failure in well-selected patients. This chapter discusses the indications and practical aspects of using NIV and HFNC in the context of weaning from MV.
