For two decades now, the African continent has been at the heart of global trade. Despite its vulnerability, it is an essential link in global supply chains. According to some informed observers, Africa is and will become the center of gravity for international trade. Indeed, according to UNCTAD (2025), Africa has abundant resources, a growing consumer market, an expanding middle class (which consumes sophisticated goods and services), shorter and easier access to primary inputs, a young workforce that is gradually becoming more tech-savvy and adaptable, and significant potential in terms of renewable energy production (particularly solar energy). These advantages mask the many challenges that lie ahead, which we present through the logic of innovation in the logistics and transport sector: challenges related to international trade, the governance model, the quality of infrastructure and the ecological transition, and finally education and research. Based on contributions from some forty experts from academia, the professional world, and civil society, the book offers an original framework for reflection that provides a detailed understanding of the changes affecting the African continent as a whole.
