In this work, the current most implemented standards for Energy Management Systems (EnMS) ISO 50001:2018 and Environmental Management Systems (EMS) ISO 14001:2015 are addressed and linked based on a sustainable approach. Nowadays, organizations are required to establish robust and integrated management systems, responding to intensive competition and complex market dynamics. The combined implementation of these standards is a recent research field, due to the early arrival of ISO 50001 in 2011. There are already some studies regarding the benefits, drivers, challenges, and barriers that companies face with this integration. However, the divergences between these standards and how to couple them, have not been explored yet in the literature. Therefore, this paper aims to propose a methodology to couple divergent aspects of these standards, for the promotion of good energy-environmental practices. The results show that the main divergent aspects appear in the planning and operation stages and are related to ISO 50001 requirements not included in ISO 14001. A quantitative approach is used in the first but not in the second. Thus, extrapolating this approach, the divergences are linked through a six-step methodology that can help any organization achieve sustainable performance. This is, higher energy and environmental performance, as well as resource optimization. Furthermore, the findings presented could be useful for standardization bodies and policymakers in driving the use of green energy for sustainable development.
