The Syndicate
摘要
This chapter examines the Psilocybe Syndicate as a premier psychedelic retreat company, and its role in the professionalisation, commodification, and ideological shaping of psychedelic spirituality within the contemporary spiritual marketplace. It explores how the Syndicate markets its product through a refined New Age aesthetic infused with professionalised branding, targeting middle-class professionals with premium-priced, curated psychedelic experiences. Through online ethnographic analysis of the Syndicate’s digital content, retreat structures, community events, and inaugural conference, the chapter reveals how the company constructs a sacralised psychotherapeutic container for psychedelic drug use and propagates normative standards and ideological directives. The chapter further critiques the Syndicate’s political and moral framing of psychedelic drug use, uncovering the strategic use of spiritual rhetoric to legitimise its corporate goals. Ultimately, the chapter contends that the Syndicate embodies a new form of spiritual superiority—commercially packaged, politicised, and reinforced through hierarchical structures of credibility.
