Incorporating Phenological Traits for Mapping of Invasive Plant Species in Urban Ecosystems

The urban ecosystem consists of many complex socio-economic processes, which lead to the removal of existing vegetation and biological introductions in the ecosystem. These introductions can lead to the decline of the native population due to intra/inter-specific interactions. Remote sensing is a fundamental tool that is prominent in mapping these invasions in the ecosystem. This chapter summarizes how incorporating phenology in mapping invasive plant species has been used to characterize ecosystem functions. The potential of the phenological aspect in urban ecosystems is under-discussed which has been a highlight in this chapter. An extensive review of the literature addresses how phenological trait mapping has been used in urban mapping in the past and how it can be extremely important for comprehending plant physiological processes. The evidence of using remote sensing in this process is emerging to study changes in the ecosystem, vegetation structure and plant indicators.
