In this chapter, we will examine the second law of thermodynamics and study its implications. Unlike the first law of thermodynamics, which is a fundamental tool for problem solving, the second law does not inform us of what can be done but of what cannot be done in thermodynamic processes and cycles. The second law of thermodynamics also puts very real limits on the efficiency of devices and cycles, limits that are often surprisingly low.

摘要

In this chapter, we will examine the second law of thermodynamics and study its implications. Unlike the first law of thermodynamics, which is a fundamental tool for problem solving, the second law does not inform us of what can be done but of what cannot be done in thermodynamic processes and cycles. The second law of thermodynamics also puts very real limits on the efficiency of devices and cycles, limits that are often surprisingly low.
