This chapter explores the evolutionary roots of human bonding and how modern digital influences are reshaping intimate relationships. Beginning with evidence of an ancient human population bottleneck that may have catalysed the development of Theory of Mind—our unique ability to understand others’ perspectives—the text examines how this cognitive adaptation forms the foundation of love and pair-bonding essential to human survival. The discussion then pivots to contemporary challenges, particularly how widespread pornography exposure is distorting young people’s understanding of sexuality and intimacy. Early exposure to unrealistic, often aggressive sexual content creates disconnects between fantasy and reality, especially problematic for developing adolescent brains. The chapter also highlights concerning trends: anatomical desensitisation, consent confusion, and communication breakdowns between males and females with different evolutionary priorities and social skill levels. The chapter concludes by examining the “incel” phenomenon and how social environments that shield individuals from necessary feedback can create adults unable to navigate real-world relationships, perpetuating cycles of social isolation and resentment in an increasingly digital world where authentic connection skills are more vital than ever.
