Screens Are Changing the Brains of Children and Teens: And Not in a Good Way

This chapter explores the concerning relationship between excessive screen time and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children and adolescents. Emerging research suggests that “Intensive Early Screen Exposure” correlates with autism-like behaviours, with studies showing that 1–2 hours of screen time at age one doubles the risk of ASD diagnosis by age three. The neurological mechanism for this appears linked to disrupted development of critical social skills, particularly Theory of Mind—the ability to understand others’ perspectives. When screens displace real-world social interactions during sensitive developmental periods, children fail to build essential neural pathways for emotional recognition and social reciprocity. This parallels historical cases of severe social deprivation, like Genie Wiley, who demonstrated irreversible developmental deficits. The documented 17-fold increase in ASD diagnoses over 50 years, doubling in the last 20, coincides with widespread screen technology adoption. The research noted in the chapter suggests that these trends may also contribute to increasing narcissism, declining empathy, and rising social polarisation observed in younger generations.
