This paper defends research into artificial consciousness. It defines a legitimate goal of AGI as the creation of technology where humans (or posthumans) have attained properties traditionally associated with gods: specifically, immortality and omniscience. It argues against the precautionary principle and outlines an ethical roadmap to this destination.
