Exploring Dark Patterns: A Comparative Analysis of User Experiences on Web and App Platforms
摘要
A user interface known as a “dark pattern” influences users’ decisions while purposefully misleading them to the business’s advantage. This research paper aims to ascertain how users are susceptible to various dark patterns and to ascertain what kind of interaction users have with dark patterns when using various web modalities. This article lists five components that are crucial for users to recognize dark patterns even when they are not fully aware of the unethical motivations driving the design. These five factors exhibit strong correlations and associations with the user’s capacity to recognize irregularities. This study advances our knowledge of the factors that expose users to dark patterns, including frequency of occurrence, trustworthiness, level of frustration, user interface deception, as well as the impact of different forms of dark patterns on user experience. The present study employed a preliminary examination of dark patterns in its early phase, succeeded by a close observation experiment of the user interface incorporating dark patterns. The variables and factors of identification found in this study can help the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community understand the negative effects of dark patterns on usability across various platforms.
