Over-expression of the immune checkpoint inhibitors is an important approach for malignant cells to escape the host immune system; therefore, the use of monoclonal antibodies blocking immune checkpoint receptors can restore the antitumor immune responses. In recent decade, considerable development has been made in the immunotherapeutic strategies in the setting of urological cancers. Immunotherapy based on modulation of immune checkpoint inhibitors is of great research importance and finds its place as a standard treatment of cancers such as renal cell carcinoma and advanced bladder cancer due to the higher efficacy and safety outcomes over usual second-line treatments. In the case of prostate cancer, treatments based on immune checkpoint inhibition have shown an anti-cancer action but have not proven clinical benefit yet and further researches are still necessary to completely accept its safety and efficacy. Currently, there are unending studies are evaluating the effectiveness of new combination strategies as well as inhibition of the next generation of immune checkpoint receptors in urological cancers. Therefore, in the near future, there will be other agents based on novel immune checkpoint inhibitors or other combinations, which may become appropriate immunotherapies for the patients.
