Metastasis is a lethal process that is the reason for most cancer-related deaths. It is an extensively researched field yet paradoxically is the least understood component of cancer biology. Molecular principles and metabolic profiles of cancer cells during this process can help develop effective therapeutic options for this deadly process. Cancer cells can modify their metabolism in each step during the metastatic cascade to get use to their environment. Furthermore, metastatic cancer cells have different metabolic profiles from the cells of the primary tumor, which is crucial to their survival. As the metabolic traits of metastatic cells are dependent on the stage they are at, therapeutic options can be developed to be directed at cells at each stage. Here we summarize the invasion-metastatic cascade and cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in each stage. We also discuss the metabolic changes of metastatic cells during each stage.

摘要
