Tumors exhibit a complex structure composed of tumor cells, various stromal cells, and extracellular matrix proteins. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) have been reported to be one of major stromal cells in the tumor microenvironment, showing a cell population with heterogeneity in cellular origin, phenotype, and function. These CAFs are known to influence immune cell recruitment by secreting a variety of cytokines and chemokines and to affect tumor microenvironment formation through tissue remodeling. In this chapter, we would like to highlight recent advances regarding the crosstalk between CAFs and immune cells in the context of tumor development and discuss the molecular mechanisms underlying their possible immunoinhibitory capabilities.
