Chapter 7 looks at the major challenges associated with the application of the principle prohibiting superfluous injury or unnecessary suffering (SIrUS) from the perspective of naval warfare and emerging technologies. Advancements in military technology introduce new domains—namely cyber and space warfare—that present distinct interpretative and operational challenges concerning SIrUS. Furthermore, this chapter considers the challenges associated with AI and autonomous weapon systems, focusing on the changing legal framework and ethical implications of technological advancements. The author examines current debates, emphasizing the complexities and the need for adaptable frameworks to maintain the core humanitarian principles of the law of armed conflict in contemporary combat situations. This chapter offers a brief exploratory reflection on emerging technologies in warfare rather than in-depth legal analysis. As such, it is intended to stimulate further scholarly engagement.
