This chapter begins with a discussion of the various applications of drones, including in the military, for search and rescue operations, in agriculture and for logistics. Despite the prevalent use of military drones, this chapter emphasises their potential to reduce emissions through efficient goods transportation. It also highlights the advantages of surveillance drones in monitoring environmental issues such as illegal logging, poaching, and maritime emissions. It then examines the carbon footprint of drone transport and compares it with that of traditional methods, such as motorcycles and vans. It suggests that, under certain conditions, drones can be more environmentally friendly. Furthermore, it discusses optimising food delivery using drones to reduce food waste and improve supply chain efficiency. Finally, this chapter addresses the challenges of drone operations, including the need for new infrastructure and the complexities of flying drones safely. Overall, this chapter presents an analysis of how drones can be used to benefit the environment while acknowledging the obstacles that need to be overcome.
